Fraud and scams are at an all time high. It sucks that people want to take advantage of us when there's already so much going on in the world. The best thing we can do is be prepared and educate ourselves on the different types of fraud and scams that are happening.
Although there are a countless amount of ways people can scam you- here are some of the most common:
1. Someone contacting you pretending they are calling from the government/FBI. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ OK no. No one from the government will ever call you directly to collect money. That's just not how it works. HANG UP THAT DANG PHONE. (I will say though, when I was about 19 years old- I got one of these calls for the first time and was in tears because I was so scared and didn't know what to do. Thank goodness I hung up and called my dad after this guy started harassing me on the phone)
2. Payment in the form of gift cards. I'll never understand this one BUT it happens alllllll the time. Do not buy gift cards and send them the card numbers. Just don't do it.
3. Check deposits. This one PISSES ME OFF because it's so sneaky for those who don't know how the check clearing process works. Checks take up to 10+ days to clear. Even if the full amount is available in your account- that does not mean it cannot be rejected or returned.
If someone sends you a check, even if it looks real... and you are 1. Either not expecting it 2. It's more than what you agreed on 3. Don't know the person... DONT DEPOSIT IT. Do nooooot. Scammers will have you deposit a check and ask you to send some of the money back. But since it's a fake check, after a certain amount of days the check returns out of your account and your account goes negative OR you lose a certain amount of money (the amount you gave to the scammer). Get someone at a bank to take a look at it.
4.Online banking. Don't give anyone your username or password. Period. It's a scam. Scam. Scam. Scam. Don't do it.
I dislike scammers with a passion. Please take your time when something seems too good to be true regarding money. Talk to someone at a bank or credit union and keep your money safe!!
