The thing I get asked the most is "how can I fix my credit?"
Well, it really depends on what's affecting it negatively.
Derogatory marks are things that have the most negative affect on your credit.
Late payments, collections, repossessions, bankruptcy, etc. AVOID THESE AT ALL COSTS IF POSSIBLE.
Not only do they have a negative affect on your credit, but they also remain on your credit report for up to 10 years.
If you need to dispute something, you can do that directly with each of the three credit bureaus. Unfortunately lenders can make mistakes and report things in error, so it's always a good idea to check your credit report multiple times a year.
What if there's legitimate derog showing on your credit report?
HAVE NO FEAR. You can still work on building that credit while you take care of the derog items.
See if your bank or credit union offer secured loans. Have someone you trust cosign on a loan with you. If you have any active loans/credit- continue to pay on time.
It takes time to rebuild credit but it can and will get better as long as you're being proactive.
